River Lot at Espalion Painting. This shows the attractive little town of Espalion on the River Lot is in the French department of Aveyron. The Pont-Vieux is a lovely red sandstone packhorse bridge that spans the river here. The Vieux Palais on the left is a domed and turreted chateau dating from 1572. It is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. Espalion has been, and remains, an important stopping-off point on the pilgrim route to Comino de Santiago de Compostela in Spain – the Way of St James. In France this route runs from Le Puy to the southwest towards the Pyrenees Mountains and Spain, and ultimately to the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
