This is a painting of a harris hawk. This beautiful bird of prey breeds in the southwest of USA and in various parts of South America. It is also found in Britain and elsewhere in Western Europe, but these are probably escapees from captivity.
It is, however, one of the most popular birds for falconry, being easy to train. They have a wingspan of 100 to 120 cm.
Trained Harris Hawks have been used to remove unwanted pigeons from London’s Trafalgar Square and from the tennis courts at Wimbledon.
