Great Cloisters at Fountains Abbey Painting. This is my painting of Fountains Abbey, near Ripon in North Yorkshire. Fountains Abbey is one of the largest and best preserved monasteries of the Cistercian Order in England. I was founded in 1132 and operated for over 400 years until the dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII. The Great Cloisters has rows of columns and vaulted ceilings that are a fine picturesque sight today, but must have been truly spectacular when in use by the original monks.
