Eilean Donan Highland castle painting. This is the first of my three paintings of this subject. The view is of the Scottish fortress, Eilean Donan Castle, looking west. It is one of Scotland’s most-photographed historic castles. Its strategic location is a few miles before Kyle of Lochalsh and the bridge to the Isle of Skye.

The sea and majestic mountains of the Highlands almost surround this castle. As a result, this becomes a landscape, a seascape and a view of a fine historic building, all contained in a single painting. Eilean Donan Castle was built on a small offshore island and the narrow stone bridge that can be seen links it to the shore.

The locals built the original castle, which dates back to 1230, to protect this area from the Vikings. Troops from Spain occupied the castle during the Jacobite uprising in 1719, but then it was blown up during an English sea-borne attack. Rebuilt in the early 1900s, it has been featured in major films and crowds of tourists to the Scottish Western Highlands now come to enjoy it.
