Clifton Suspension Bridge

Clifton Suspension Bridge Painting by Stanley Port

Acrylics on canvas: 35 x 45 cm

This painting was commissioned and so is Not for Sale

This is a painting of the fine Clifton suspension bridge near Bristol. The bridge spans the Avon Gorge and River Avon. It links Clifton in Bristol with Leigh Woods in North Somerset. The design was done by W H Barlow and John Hawkshaw based on an earlier design by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Construction started in 1831 but was soon halted by the Bristol riots and there were many other problems, so the bridge was not completed and opened until 1864. Unfortunately Brunel died in 1859 before seeing the completed construction that has become a famous icon. The bridge has always been a toll crossing and is a Grade 1 listed building.

The painting was commissioned from artist Stanley Port during 2024. It shows clearly the bridge itself and the deep gorge, as well as the many balloon flights that frequently operate in the area.
