Assisi is a town in Umbria in Central Italy, where St. Francis was born and died. The basilica is one of the most important places of Christian pilgrimage and is a distinct landmark to those approaching Assisi. Built in 1228, it comprises two churches one above the other. The Upper and Lower churches are decorated with many fine frescoes by numerous late medieval painters.
In 1997 an earthquake caused the collapse of the vault. The church was closed for two years for restoration.
