Waverley Abbey in Surrey Painting:  Waverley Abbey was the first Cistercian abbey in England, founded in 1128 by the Bishop of Winchester. Located near Godalming in Surrey, it is on a floodplain and almost surrounded by the River Wey.  The abbey was closed in 1536 by Henry VIII and largely demolished for its stone. The ruins are currently managed by English Heritage and are open to the public.
