I have painted this landscape in the style of Ivan Shishkin. He was a 19th Century artist (1832 – 1898) who lived much of his life in St Petersburg. He painted many fine landscapes of wild nature, birds and animals and for a time many of his subjects were scenes in the forests to the south of St Petersburg. This painting shows a dense conifer forest with an open clearing beyond. I particularly like the contrast in lighting between the bright sunny clearing and the somber mass of trees, with the pond and tree trunk in the foreground.
